Intro to Radio Course
AIM
The course is aimed for people who have no experience in radio or come from a community radio background. The course is about preparing you with skills and knowledge to be able to start your career in a commercial radio station. It is also suited for those who wish to improve their skills work in community radio.

COURSE CONTENT
On Air Computers
All commercial stations use audio computer technology. You’ll develop an understanding of this and more importantly how to use it.
Announcing and News Reading
Using your voice with preparation and presentation techniques.
Programming
The function of the Program Director. The non music elements, music categories, music structure to target audiences, research, announcer direction and disciplines and outside broadcasts.
Copywriting
Ideas and thought starters for Radio Copywriters, creative writing in today’s market place, creating radio ads that work, the use of production music, sound effects and much more.
Formats
Music balance, announcer stop –downs, speed breaks, placement of news, sport and weather information, community service announcements, promotions schedules and station ID’s.
The Ratings
Overview and examples of radio audiences measurement and market research.
Broadcast Standards
Rules and regulations that govern radio, obligations, ethics and legalities.
Equipment
The changing face of broadcast technology, studio layouts, digital audio storage and retrieval, the broadcast computer and training on NexGen.
Job Application
Marketing yourself to the radio industry. How to create a winning application and a professional demo. Job assistance will be offered to everyone.

Understand how you can start out in a variety of roles.
Understand the difference and importance between live announcing and pre recorded voiceovers and how to do both.

To further help you get a foot in the door to your first copywriting position, the Course Director will, at no extra cost, offer you a FREE critique of any scripts you write after the course, and will produce them on a CD for you to keep, to submit with your application to a future employer.
